Allergy skin tests or skin patch testing may be useful in certain skin disorders such as eczema (atopic dermatitis) and contact dermatitis. Approximately 10% of eczema sufferers will show signs of immediate food allergy which can be diagnosed by skin prick testing. Delayed reactions to food are more commonly associated with eczema flare-ups.
Contact dermatitis is often caused by a delayed allergy best diagnosed by skin patch testing. Common allergens include Zinc in jewellery, cosmetics, perfume and rubber based products. Some occupations are more prone to contact dermatitis e.g. hairdressers.
